About Graham Tarr

Work

Graham is a highly motivated Mining Engineer with extensive experience and qualifications. He is a proactive team player with a proven ability to drive safety and production to record levels, consistently improving employee performance and advancing company objectives toward achieving key targets.

At Anglo Gold he worked in the administration, accounts departments and in TDS (Technical and development services). He did a full costing exercise of executives flight costs between head-office and the mines. Worked with new technology in the mines such as button drill bits, raise-boring and electrical LHD’s: all of which a great success now. Graham also did production stoping, development, equipping and tramming as miner and shift overseer. He did training with all aspects pertaining to a full production mine.

At TDS he worked on the following projects;

  • Drill rigs in Stopes
  • Product in a pipe - pumpable explosives and cement packs and up dip scraping
  • Blasting science
  • Electric grinder sampling tool
  • Venturi mud sucker
  • Vacuuming vamping areas

He had many successes in the production environment as well as doing vamping.

Production experience:

  • Miner and shift overseer;
  • Developing
  • Stoping
  • Equipping
  • Tramming

And part of my training I attended each mining department for 3 to 4 weeks.

He was deeply involved with doing time-studies and worked with the draftsman on auto-cad and is familiar with this program. Furthermore he worked closely with the industrial engineers as-well as working in the workshop doing construction and working with hydraulics and has a good understanding of creating a concept into a design and then having it manufactured and implemented.

At Lonmin he worked shallow and deep as-well as open pit areas of the platinum rich ore-body. Doing training and reports for production areas.

At Goldfield Ashanti his work involved running the deepest flat development end in virgin ground in the world at the time - 3700m underground. Doing extensive secondary support and managing a remote-controlled raise-borer as-well. They held the world record for the most advance in a single production month.

He completed A and B part of his mine managers certificate of competency MMCC.

Syanda Sizwe Zwane

The Academic Journey of Syanda Sizwe Zwane

From the quiet hills of Shiyane to Nquthu, my story begins — a journey shaped by curiosity, determination, and a vision for change. Growing up in a rural area was never easy. Roads were often in poor condition, living in unsafe houses, and basic infrastructure was limited. But these very challenges planted a seed in me — the desire to become part of the solution.

My High School Years – Where the Dream Began

During my years in high school, curiosity was my constant companion. I often found myself fascinated by the built environment around me. I wanted to know how roads connected towns, how bridges stood strong over rushing rivers, and how buildings could rise from nothing but soil and stone. This curiosity was not just idle wonder — it was the beginning of a dream.

In subjects like Civil Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, I saw opportunities to understand the logic and principles behind construction and design. I enjoyed problem-solving and working through challenges, both inside and outside the classroom. My teachers often noted my eagerness to help others understand concepts they struggled with. Helping my classmates was something I did naturally — not just because it reinforced my own knowledge, but because I believed in growing together.

It was in these formative years that I decided to pursue civil engineering. I knew that this path would allow me to return to communities like my own and bring about real change — to design safe houses, improve road networks, and create infrastructure that improves lives.

The Leap to University – Durban University of Technology

In 2022, I took a bold step towards my dream when I enrolled at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) to study for my Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering. Moving from a rural area to a more urban academic environment was both exciting and overwhelming.

The transition was challenging. University life brought with it heavy workloads, new teaching styles, and a higher level of independence. There were moments when the pressure felt intense — balancing coursework, projects, and financial constraints was never easy. However, my determination to succeed kept me going.

At DUT, my helpful nature continued to shine. I often assisted classmates with assignments, explained complex concepts, and worked with peers in study groups to ensure no one was left behind. These collaborations not only strengthened my understanding but also built a sense of teamwork that I believe is essential in engineering.

Overcoming Challenges

There were times when the journey tested my perseverance. Financial limitations meant that I had to be disciplined with resources. Academic challenges meant I had to push beyond my comfort zone, spending countless late nights studying and working on design projects. Yet, each obstacle became a stepping stone. I learned resilience, time management, and the importance of asking for help when needed.

Graduation – A Milestone Achieved

In 2024, I proudly graduated with my Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering. Walking across the graduation stage was more than just a personal achievement — it was a victory for my family, my community, and for every young person from a small town who dreams big.

Looking Ahead

Today, I am pursuing opportunities in the engineering field. My vision remains clear: to contribute to South Africa’s infrastructure by designing safer houses, better roads, and facilities that uplift communities — especially in rural areas.

My academic journey has been about more than just gaining knowledge. It has been about building character, serving others, and believing that change is possible when you commit yourself fully. I carry forward not just my degree, but the values of teamwork, resilience, and service that shaped me from high school to university.

For me, civil engineering is not just a career — it is a calling. And my story is proof that with passion, hard work, and a willingness to help others, even a boy from the hills of Shiyane can help build the future.
